New event format: Weltempfang Satellites / Juergen Boos in conversation

conversation with Åsne Seierstad and Hans Leyendecker, Aslı Erdoğan, Can Dündar and Burhan Sönmez as well as Thomas Wagner and Gerhard Hensel

Frankfurt, 6 October 2017 – What influence does fake news have on political reporting? What is it like to live and write in exile? And how should we deal with the invigoration of the New Right? These topics are pervasive at the moment and will also dominate the conversation at the Frankfurter Buchmesse. That’s why Juergen Boos, Director of the Frankfurter Buchmesse, is inviting to three press talks in which, together with experts, journalists, writers and activists, he will try to form a picture of the current state of the debate and of his guests’ personal assessments and experiences.

The new conversation format “Weltempfang Satellite” will be held in the Business Club on three trade-visitor days from 9.30 to 10.15 am.

Why does fake news play such a big role in mobilising “protest” and “anger” in society? What does it mean for high-quality journalism if every person is basically able to publish fake news and find a corresponding audience for it? On Wednesday, 11 October 2017, Juergen Boos will speak with war correspondent Åsne Seierstad (“Zwei Schwestern - Im Bann des Dschihad”, Kein & Aber) and the distinguished investigative journalist Hans Leyendecker about the influence of fake news on our society.

Freedom of opinion and freedom of the press are acutely threatened in Turkey and many other countries. As a result, many writers and authors live and publish in exile. On the Thursday of the fair, Juergen Boos will talk to Aslı Erdoğan (“Nicht einmal das Schweigen gehört uns noch”, Knaus), Can Dündar (“Verräter - Von Istanbul nach Berlin. Aufzeichnungen im deutschen Exil”, Hoffmann & Campe) and Burhan Sönmez (“Istanbul, Istanbul”, btb) about their experiences in exile.

And, on Friday, the conversation with Thomas Wagner (“Die Angstmacher – 1968 und die Neuen Rechten”, Aufbau) and Gerald Hensel (founder of Fearless Democracy, partner at PLOT) will examine the new identity of the New Right.

Registration is required for these events; please write to press@book-fair.com.
