Abu Dhabi International Book Fair

Books Germany is talking about
Every year, the Frankfurt Book Fair puts together a number of book collections on different topical subjects. These are currently being discussed in Germany and also noted with interest in other countries. The standard collections include children’s books, new literary releases and other.

With funding from the Federal Foreign Office, the Frankfurt Book Fair presents book collections on the German collective stands that pick up on current areas of interest.

Are you interested in any of the books on display? Our colleagues on the spot will be happy to set up contacts with the German publishing companies or to advise you on how to obtain the books on show.

You can also view the book collections in the Frankfurt Book Fair’s offices abroad.

Border stories - The Comics' Collection 2012

Comic Zentrum 2010 1

Graphic novels are enjoying a steady growth in popularity.
More and more bookshops and libraries are displaying these kinds of comic prominently with a section devoted to them permanently in their programme. The cultural pages of newspapers report regularly on the graphic novels, and general interest publishers are increasingly open to the genre. Some titles are filmed and thus become even better known.
But what is a graphic novel anyway? When, in the 1970s, the multi-faceted comics author, Will Eisner, added a subheading to the cover of his, A Contract with God, describing it as a graphic novel, he wanted to make clear his comic should be viewed as a work of literature, and that the stories it contained were aimed at an adult readership. Not only was the book released through a literary publisher, but it was also produced as a hardback in a smaller format, which helped bring it closer to its target audience's expectations of a literary work. Today, based on that first book, a separate genre has developed, formally categorised together with comics, yet widely differentiated in terms of content. Above all, a graphic novel is similar to a traditional novel in being self-contained, rather than published as an episodic series, as is the case with comics.

The return of politics to German-language literature – The Frankfurt Book Fair's book collection of new literary titles in 2011
"There are many trails through German literature... In the last two years, however, the country roads into the German provinces have been widened substantially. Here it’s even possible to meet 'Black Forest Girls' who, as in Daniel Bachmann’s novel of that name, also live eventful lives as politically hyperactive women... People’s unease about contemporary events has found its way into literature in many ways."
Dr Eberhard Falcke, literary critic and arts journalist, on the new literary releases.

Children's books on tour

Kibu-abo Roboter 2012 32048

A selection of books suitable for translations all around the world
German children’s and young adult books are more in demand abroad than ever before. In 2010, 3,084 licenses were sold abroad, accounting for 37.7 per cent of all licenses and up nearly 5 per cent over the previous year. This makes children’s and young adult books the largest category for international business and within Germany they are the second largest segment. With 8,082 new titles, they constituted a 15.2 per cent share of total book sales in 2010.

For many years, the Frankfurt Book Fair has invited German-language publishers to tap into this popular demand by presenting a selection of their books abroad.
In 2012, 15 renowned publishers will participate in the collection “New Children’s Books”. A total of 54 compelling titles from these publishers (*link to title list as soon as books are online*) will be displayed and promoted at 15 foreign book fairs and at our foreign offices in China, the USA, Russia and India.

In 2012, the “New Children’s Books” collection will travel with the German Collective Stands to the following fairs: Abu Dhabi, Budapest, Buenos Aires, Gothenburg, Guadalajara, Istanbul, Jakarta, Cairo, Cape Town, Moscow, Beijing, Prague, Sao Paulo, Tehran and Warsaw.
