42!

In a restaurant at the very heart of Berlin, over a glass of good wine, we devised an alternative gate to the English language global market. Details will be given in next year’s “Series: Future of the industry – new business models” of the Frankfurt Book Fair’s newsletter. Err.
… and we go.

Marvellous Munich

Hello everyone from the New Zealand contingent,

Today we arrived in Munich which is quite possibly the most beautiful city ever! I have now won two awards: for travelling the longest distance to get to the fellowship (also an excellent excuse for anything “Oh, it is the jetlag, not the apple wine that is my problem”) and now I have won the award for the largest suitcase. Incase anyone wonders, yes I can fit inside the suitcase, I have tried.

We had two very diverse publishing house visits today: C H Beck, publishers for 246 years (I think that is older than my country) and then Random House. I feel I am learning so much, from both the publishers and the lively discussion that develops between the fellows. Also, the more I learn the more I realise how unique New Zealand’s publishing market is, but also how much we have to offer the world from both the sales and buying of rights. And of course much much more, but that will be another blog.

Tomorrow we have more publishing visits in Munich. Everyone is settling in to a nice routine here: the weather is warm, the atmosphere relaxed, our room size has tripled and we even have a team photographer and an Egyptian superhero on the fellowship. All up it feels like a great group and such a wonderful diversity.

For now, I have jetlag to sleep off and another action-packed publishing day to prepare for. So, Gute Nacht!

Presentations and hock

Our first day was very relaxed – a mere 18 individual presentations, 16 from the fellows and two about the German publishing industry. With each presentation, I couldn’t help but think, “I want to visit THAT country!” With our brains well and truly filled, we set off for the centre of Frankfurt for a literary tour in the rain. It wasn’t long before we settled in a traditional German restraurant for apple wine and pork. Well, our side of the table settled for large chunks of pork, or was it chicken? Everyone was extremely well behaved with much polite conversation about national drinks: “typical man-talk” as someone put it, something that puts her to sleep. And so it is to bed we all go, ready for whatever  tomorrow holds.

The Fellowship Programme

The Frankfurt Book Fair Fellowship Programme gives a deep insight to the German book world and brings the Fellows to important centres of German publishing. This year, the group will visit Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin again. Publishing professionals provide an overview of the German book market and pass their international career experiences on to the Fellows.

Annual reunions of former Frankfurt Fellows at the Frankfurt Book Fair keep the Frankfurt Fellows network up.
