Bence Sárközy
I studied Hungarian linguistics and literary studies and comparative literary studies at university and went straight from there to Magvető. I spent my first three years editing and lecturing in literary theory and literary history while I was doing my PhD. I have a particular passion for contemporary, Hungarian literature and the literary gothic, but I am generally omnivorous in my reading. I live together with my wife and two children in Budapest.
Magvető is a distinguished and award-winning publisher of contemporary, Hungarian fiction with authors including the Nobel Prize winner Imre Kertész as well as names known beyond Hungary such as Péter Esterházy, László Krasznahorkai, Ádám Bodor, Attila Bartis, László Darvasi and György Dragomán. We also publish a selection of the finest from world literature including Cormac McCarthy, Gabriel García Márquez, Thomas Pynchon, Michell Huollebecq and Lyudmila Ulitskaya.
Magvető was founded in 1955 by the Ministry of Culture with the sole purpose of publishing contemporary Hungarian writers. The company was heavily restructured after the transition in 1989, but has retained an almost identical literary profile.
Magvető now publishes 40-45 new titles – fiction, poetry, drama and non-fiction – each year.
